Data Center Condenser Water Tank: Tower Loop Storage and Scaling

A data center condenser water tank stores water for the condenser loop between the cooling towers and the chillers. The water is aerated, chemically treated and concentrated by evaporation, so the tank must resist scaling, biological growth and corrosion at the same time. Blowdown control sets the cycles of concentration, which determines both water consumption and how aggressive the water becomes. Coatings specified for this duty - vitreous enamel fused at 820-930 C or factory-cured epoxy - must be checked against the actual treatment regime, and the tank needs blowdown, filtration and sampling provisions to be operable.

The condenser water loop is where water quality management becomes continuous rather than occasional. Water evaporates, dissolved solids concentrate, treatment chemicals are dosed, and the loop stays warm and wet, which is an ideal environment for both scale and biological growth.

This article explains what the loop does to water, how blowdown control and cycles of concentration work, and what that means for the tank that stores condenser water. It complements the articles on cooling makeup sizing and tower loop configuration.

Technical Explanation

What happens to the water in the loop

Four processes run simultaneously in an evaporative condenser loop:

•  Evaporation removes pure water, leaving dissolved solids behind, so concentration rises continuously.

•  Scaling occurs when the concentration of calcium and magnesium salts exceeds their solubility at the loop temperature, depositing on heat transfer surfaces and in the tank.

•  Corrosion proceeds in aerated water, and its rate depends on pH, dissolved solids, chlorides and the inhibitor programme.

•  Biological growth develops in warm, wet, aerated conditions, forming deposits that harbour corrosion and reduce heat transfer.

Blowdown and cycles of concentration

Cycles of concentration are the operating variable that links water consumption to water quality:

•  Cycles of concentration describe how many times the makeup water has been concentrated by evaporation; higher cycles mean less blowdown and less water consumed.

•  Blowdown is calculated as evaporation divided by (cycles of concentration minus one), so raising cycles reduces the discharge volume and the makeup demand together.

•  The achievable limit is set by scaling and corrosion risk, which depend on the makeup water chemistry and the treatment programme - not on the tower or the tank.

•  Corrosion and scale inhibitors and a biocide programme normally allow several cycles of concentration, but the constraint has to be established from the water analysis.

What that means for the tank

The tank sits in water that is more concentrated and more chemically active than the makeup supply:

•  Coating selection: vitreous enamel or fusion bonded epoxy, applied in the factory to both faces, with the treatment chemicals checked against the coating data sheet at their operating concentrations.

•  Galvanized steel: zinc coatings are consumed in continuously wet, circulating water, and dissolved zinc is a water quality consideration, so galvanizing suits atmospheric or intermittent duty better than a condenser loop.

•  Suspended solids: filtration or side-stream separation protects the tank from accumulating deposits that would otherwise settle in quiescent zones.

•  Provisions: blowdown connection, sampling point and level control, so the water balance can be managed and verified in operation.

Operating practice that protects the tank

Two practices make the difference between a tank that lasts and one that becomes a maintenance item:

•  Keep the treatment programme under control: inhibitor and biocide dosing to the specified concentrations prevents the conditions that attack both the loop and the tank coating.

•  Watch quiescent zones: water that is not swept by the circulating flow is where deposits form. Inlet and outlet arrangement should avoid stagnant pockets, and periodic inspection should target them.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why is blowdown necessary?

A: Because evaporation leaves dissolved solids behind, so their concentration rises continuously. Blowdown discharges a proportion of the concentrated water and replaces it with fresh makeup, keeping the concentration within limits where scale and corrosion can be controlled.

Q: How many cycles of concentration can a cooling tower run at?

A: It depends on the makeup water chemistry and the treatment programme. Higher cycles reduce water consumption and blowdown volume, but they also concentrate the aggressive constituents, so the limit is set by the achievable scale and corrosion control rather than by the equipment.

Q: Can a galvanized tank be used in a condenser loop?

A: Galvanizing offers less protection in continuously wet circulating water, because the zinc coating is consumed over time and zinc dissolution becomes a water quality consideration. Factory-applied enamel or epoxy coatings are the better specification for a continuously wet loop.

Q: Does the condenser water tank need a cover?

A: A cover reduces evaporation, excludes debris and limits biological growth that daylight and airborne contamination encourage. On a data center site with a controlled water programme, a covered tank is normal.

Q: How is water quality in the tank managed?

A: Through the loop treatment programme - corrosion and scale inhibitors and biocide dosing - supported by blowdown control, filtration and periodic sampling. The tank provisions exist to make those measures executable and verifiable.

Q: What should be inspected inside the tank?

A: Coating condition across the shell, base and waterline, the condition of sealant joints, evidence of scaling or deposits, particularly in quiescent zones, and the condition of nozzles, blowdown and level devices.

Condenser loop water is concentrated, treated, aerated and warm, which makes it the most demanding routine duty for a water tank coating. Blowdown control sets how concentrated the water becomes, and the tank specification has to follow it: a factory-applied coating selected against the actual treatment programme, with filtration, sampling and blowdown provisions so the loop can be managed.
