
A fixed-roof tank storing volatile product breathes. Every day the vapour space expands and contracts with temperature, pushing product-laden vapour out through the vent and drawing fresh air back in to become saturated again. Over a year that breathing loss is a measurable quantity of saleable product and a measurable emission. It is also entirely avoidable: if the roof floats on the liquid, there is no vapour space to breathe.
That is the whole principle of the floating roof, and it is why nearly every large crude and volatile- product tank uses one. Engineered by Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel), an external floating roof is a deck that rides on the stored liquid, sealed to the shell by a rim seal system, rising and falling with level so that the liquid surface is always covered.
A buoyant deck rests on the liquid and moves with level, while a flexible rim seal closes the gap to the shell. Because the liquid surface is covered, standing storage loss collapses to the small amount that escapes past the seal and through deck fittings.
· Buoyancy and Stability: Pontoons or a full double deck provide buoyancy with enough reserve to stay afloat with a specified number of compartments flooded.
· Rim Seal System: A primary seal plus a secondary seal closes the annular gap as the deck travels, accommodating shell out-of-roundness and deck drift.
· Deck Drainage: Rainwater is removed by a flexible hose or articulated pipe drain; a blocked drain is the most common cause of deck flooding.
· Anti-Rotation and Guidance: Guide poles and anti-rotation devices stop the deck from spinning and keep fittings aligned with the gauging platform.
· Support Legs: Adjustable legs hold the deck at a landing height above the floor so the tank can be emptied for inspection.
Pontoon decks are lighter and cheaper and are used on smaller and medium diameters; double decks are stiffer, fully buoyant and preferred on larger tanks and where product temperature or operability matters. The choice is made on diameter, product and the owner's risk appetite.
· Pontoon Deck: An annular ring of buoyant compartments around a single centre membrane; lighter, and the membrane can ripple in wind.
· Double Deck: Two continuous plates separated by internal bulkheads; stiffer, fully buoyant, and better insulated from solar gain.
· Diameter Influence: As diameter grows, stiffness and deflection become governing, which is why large tanks move to double deck.
· Product Temperature: Warmer product increases vapour generation at the membrane and favours the insulated double-deck option.
· Operational Preference: Operators who expect long intervals between internal inspections often choose double deck for its reserve buoyancy.
More than most people expect, and most of it is drainage and seal related. A floating roof that is inspected regularly and kept drained will last the life of the tank; one that is ignored will sink.
· Drain Inspection: Roof drains are checked every outage and cleared; a blocked drain is the single most common cause of deck flooding and sinking.
· Seal Gap Survey: The rim seal gap is measured and recorded, because it is both an emission path and a fire risk.
· Pontoon Integrity: Compartments are checked for liquid ingress, which is detected by sounding or by inspection through the access hatches.
· Deck Fittings: Vacuum breakers, rim vents, gauge hatches and emergency drains are exercised and serviced on schedule.
· Bonding and Shunts: Static grounding shunts are inspected so the deck cannot accumulate charge during product movement.

Every welded oil tank delivered by Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) is designed to API 650 with shell courses sized by the one-foot method and checked for wind, seismic and hydrostatic load cases, or to EN 14015 and the Eurocodes where the site is European. Shell plate is shot-blasted to Sa 2.5 and coated to a documented dry film thickness, longitudinal and annular plate welds are examined by radiography or ultrasonic testing to the acceptance level written into the purchase order, and every tank is hydrostatically tested and dimensionally surveyed before hand-over. Floating roofs are supplied with the deck, seals, drains, support legs, rolling ladder, gauging platform, fittings and grounding, together with buoyancy calculations, a seal gap survey procedure and an inspection schedule aligned to API 653.
It removes breathing loss almost entirely, because there is no vapour space to expand and contract. What remains is standing loss past the rim seal and through deck fittings, plus a small withdrawal loss as product clings to the shell wall. For volatile products on large tanks the reduction against a fixed roof is normally in the range of eighty-five to ninety-five per cent, depending on seal condition and fitting specification.
Almost always because of water. A blocked roof drain lets rainwater accumulate until the deck loses buoyancy, or a leaking pontoon compartment fills and the deck tilts until product floods over the rim. Both are prevented by routine inspection: drains cleared at every outage, pontoons sounded for liquid, and seal gaps measured and recorded.
